Creative biz series: Alyce Tran, co-founder of the daily edited
I am such a huge fan of Alyce Tran and The Daily Edited, so I was thrilled to see her speak at Vogue codes recently. Alyce recently sold a 30 percent stake in her company to Oroton for $4.5 million, four years after she co-founded it with $7,000 savings. Their beautiful instagram feed is followed by over 240K loyal fans and they have stores Australia wide. Despite all of this, when asked if she thinks she has ‘made it’, she very matter of factly said no, and that she was just getting started. I caught up with Alyce to find out just what it took to create such a phenomenal brand.
Alyce Tran! Tell us what you are up to today?
Working on designs for our September release collection with a focus on accessories for spring racing and Father’s Day
What do you LOVE about your business?
That we make cool things!
What are your daily habits to keep you on track for world domination?
Hahaha I wouldn’t say I am going for world domination at all. I do lead a very measured lifestyle that gives me the ability to stay healthy and work 7 days a week. I go to the gym every morning, have a great breakfast and am in the office by 10am to be with my team to guide them through their daily tasks, I read a lot and keep myself informed on every aspect of the business from warehousing, customer care, finances, technology and generally leave the office around 7pm in the evenings
What has been your biggest business challenge to date and how have you overcome it?
I guess I am facing the biggest challenge at the moment, to me it was easy getting the business to its current size in terms of staffing, geographical spread, sales, the biggest challenge now is maintaining our momentum
If you could pick just one thing that has contributed to your success to date, what has it been?
This is a hard one, likely Tania (my co-founder) and I’s insatiable drive to continue to design and produce and sell to a high standard the best products for our category. We do not ever stop.
If you could only work 2 hours per week ‘on’ your business (ie growing the business, not client work) what would you do to get the most results?
Reflecting on the previous week and working out what I could do better
What is your go-to for getting a dose of inspiration?
The Internet (too broad), I flip through pretty much every magazine relevant to our industry monthly, look at news websites daily and look through a lot of tumblr accounts that I like
If you could give budding entrepreneurs one piece of advice, what would it be?
Just go for it, it doesn’t take much to get started besides giving up your weekends!
Alyce Tran, ladies and gentlemen! What an inspiration to just go do it.
